How accessible are the museum and mine for wheelchair users or pushchairs?
The museum has two levels with a household flight of stairs between. The ground floor is fully accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Pushchairs can be left downstairs whilst you visit the upper level, but there is no ramp. Temple Mine is accessed via a short steep slope and there are steps inside. Therefore it is not accessible for wheel chair users or pushchairs. Young children will need to walk or be carried in a sling on your front (please bear in mind that the roof is low in places). There is a film of the mine tour available in the cinema area of the museum.
Are there toilet facilities at the Museum?
We do not have toilets. The nearest public toilets (20p) are at the North end of the village however the Restoration Café next to the Museum will allow the public to use them (20p). The museum is working with other local groups to try to raise the money needed to build new public toilets.
Where can we park?
There is a 2 hour short-stay pay-and-display car-park adjacent to the Museum and two other long-stay car-parks within a ten minute walk.
How much time do I need for a visit?
A visit to the museum usually takes around 1 hour, although some visitors like to spend much longer. The tour of Temple Mine takes 1 hour at least. If you would like to visit both the museum and the mine allow at least 2 hours. Please see Temple Mine for more information about tour times.
Can I get anything to eat and drink at the Museum?
Hot and cold drinks and confectionery are available to buy at the museum. There are many other places to buy food and drinks in Matlock Bath.
Can I bring my dog?
Well-behaved dogs are allowed into the museum, if kept on a short lead. They are also allowed down the mine, but be aware that on busy tours they are at risk of being trodden on. The museum reserves the right to deny entry to the mine & museum with a dog if it is too busy.
Do I need to book?
If you are organising a group visit you will need to book for both the museum and mine. Please click call us on 01629 583834 or email
